Lots of activity recently - mostly centered around Richmond Park: the Queen's visit on Tuesday May 15th to celebrate Wild London, Sir David Attenborough launching the Richmond Park Ponds and Streams conservation appeal by digging out the first sod for the new Jubilee Pond; a poster design competition for aspiring artists and designers (of all ages). And we have our own new Competitions. The first of these is a competition with the award winning PlayCentre group, Eddie Catz, where the lucky winner has all the beenfits of 6 month's membership of all 3 of the Eddie Catz PlayCentres. We also have our own Colouring Competition to celebrate the Queens's visit.
The Queen's visit: After months of planning and weeks of eager anticipation on the part local residents, Her Majesty the Queen came to Richmond Park on May 15 to visit the Wild London event sponsored by The Royal Parks and supported by The Friends of Richmond Park. In true British fashion, stalwart residents battled downpours of rain and hail in between all too brief sunny spells whilst waiting for the royal car to arrive. Their patience and endurance was well rewarded when the car finally swung into view and slowly made its way up the driveway to cheers and waving of flags, stopping just in front of our own photographer, who was able to get some candid shots of the Queen being welcomed to Richmond Park.
Greeted by Sir Kenneth Knight, the deputy lieutenant of Greater London and Princess Alexandra, the Queen spent what we hope was an enjoyable hour touring the festival before heading off to Holly Lodge to enjoy an afternoon tea served by the Ham and Petersham Women's Institute. Conservation Programme: Alongside the Queen's visit, we were also treated to Sir David Attenborough digging away to start off the new Jubilee Pond. This is the first project in the park's Ponds and Streams Conservation Programme. Core funding for the project is being provided by Healthy Planet and The Friends of Richmond Park has launched a public appeal for the whole programme - and has also contributed an initial £50,000 towards the programme.
New look for the website. Alongside all of this, we have been busy planning the new look for the website.
The feedback we’ve had from the thousands of visitors who regularly visit our site has been highly encouraging. Everyone seems to like the look of the site but there are one or two areas where you feel improvements can be made. So that's what we are doing.
We are strengthening our Magazine Sections and making them more stand-alone Magzines. The first two will be Pets and Property Services. Along with helpful advice from two of our vet contributors, we will be introducing our Pets Gallery. Murdoch, on the right here, is the founding member of this gallery.
Our second new Magazine Section covers Property and Services. There will be contributions on the property market itself - trends, prices etc - from local experts as well as helpful advice on all those services that are an essential part of this market sector.
There will be be contributions from local estate agents and from those providing other essential services - eg surveying and decorating - as well as advice from our new DIY expert, DIY Dave.
So watch this space for news and information on property available in the area.
Over the next weeks, you will also see articles and features appearing on a host of new topics. Not only on the subjects mentioned above but also on Health and fitness, Food and Drink, Entertainment ..... in fact there will be contributions in all our major Magazine Sections.
Homeopathy, hypnosis, healthy eating and diet as well as acupuncture are covered in our Health and Fitness section; Maya Berry introduces us to the Eatwell Plate, shown on the left here. The Lofty Turtle, Cool Sushi, Healthland, ExCellar (booming in their new location), The Cheese Shop, Prologue and Ladak are all featured in one way or another.
There are articles on cycling, golf and fitness training and we have two special contributions - a Cycling Route and a Walking Route for those who would like to combine scenery with their exercise. These two routes have been created by two of our special contributors: the Cycling Route by Dai and the Walking Route by Sunara Spires. We are very grateful for these contributions; we might even get around to completing both routes ourselves. We can then give you a first hand report on what these two routes offer.
